Short description:	The lecture is an introduction to the study of discourse. It discusses a few selected issues of media discourse, as an example of which there are introduced the main concepts of discourse analysis. Lecture focuses on separate issues, which produce discourses governing decorum of speech on important policy areas for pop culture, consumption, national identity, The lecture is supposed to create perspective from which student can stream media statements evaluate conditions for the emergence of a variety of expression. Discourse will be presented at different levels - from the formulas of language, the stylistic conventions and imaging, and communication strategies.
Full description:	Subject matter includes the following selected issues: 1.What is the media discourse. Semiotic aspects of discourse: the major systems, sign, sign, symbol. The code language and meta-language. Cultural codes, meaning creation. Three semiotic schools: Anglo-Saxon semiotics (Peirce), Russian (Tartus school) and French (Barthes). 2. Time and space in the political discourse. 3 audio-visual language as a universal language. 4. Changing discourse - change meaning. The dominance of the discourse. Giving meaning and discourse implementation. Mediated body as text. Linguistic gender identity. 5. Media political discourse as a narrative battle: Threats and promises. Populist discourse. Polish public languages. Tabloid narratives 6. Social world and media events. Media rhetoric as a discursive practice of broadcasting meanings. Advertising as a practice of characters creation.

Learning outcomes:	KNOWLEDGE The lecture is supposed to create the meta-perspective for the media statements stream analysis, to evaluate conditions for the emergence of a variety of expressions, the rules to generate ideological messages. SKILLS Student: • recognizes the different discourses, as such, and understands what determines their conditions • can extract meaning contained in ideological discourse • can analyze the discourse - both visual and verbal • knows how to formulate the interest of those who design discourse and knows how discourse is defined as a way of describing the world
