Short description: |
The course aims to present the main concepts of civil society to facilitate understanding of the role that civil society plays in democratic regime. The impact of the citizens who involve and take activity in the independent organizations fulfills the idea of democracy. During the course participants will be familiarized with the main concepts and understanding of civil society. |

The course aims to present the main concepts of civil society to facilitate understanding of the role that civil society plays in democratic regime. The impact of the citizens who involve and take activity in the independent organizations fulfills the idea of democracy. During the course participants will be familiarized with the main concepts and understanding of civil society., its importance in the socio-political and economic development of the state The manifestation of the civil society in practice is functioning of the non-governmental organizations. Their activities encourage grassroots civic initiatives, support the formation of civic attitudes that allow citizens to articulate group and individual interests. |

Learning outcomes: |
KNOWLEDGE - Will know and be able to apply the concepts of civil society and main notions (K_W01), - Be able to characterize the basic concepts of the scope of the political phenomena and point out its relations from social sciences perspectives (K_W03), - Be able to diagnose the causes of low civic participation and its impact on the development of the civil society sector (K_W05), - Be able to highlight the factors affecting ethical principles of conducting political activities (K_W06). SKILLS - Be able to use the knowledge to understand political processes, formulate observed problems and find innovative solutions for them (K_U01), - Be able to analyze the phenomena occurring in the world based on the knowledge of the basic conceptual categories, appropriately select and apply political science theories (K_U04), - Be able to communicate with academic on the issues related to the civil society (K_05), - Be able to apply knowledge of the civil society concepts to formulate and present statements within debate on civil society (K_U06). SOCIAL COMPETENCES - Be able to critically evaluate political processes, their causes, course and effects, in particular the impact on state policies on the development civil society organizations in democratic state (K_K01), - Be able to recognize the importance of knowledge in solving political science problems concerning the state and civil society (K_K02), - Be able to take the activity for the development of local communities, society and humanity in accordance with the ethical principles of the profession (K_K03), - Be aware of the complexity and multiplicity of factors affecting the political involvement of citizens and be able to design - self or within the group - activities that aim at enhancing the desired effects in the socio-political life and to mitigate adverse(K_K04). |
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: |
The course grade will be determined by a combination of the following factors: - Class participation in discussions (50%) - possibility to become an “group expert” in a chosen topic, - 1 presentations (20%) - Final exam (30%) Regular attendance is expected. More than 2 unexcused absences need to be complete during office hours. |
