Comprehensive presentation of NATO functioning after the Cold War. Presentation of the key theoretical concepts and problems concerning political-military alliances, discussion on basic elements of NATO organisational structure, goals, task and resources, as well as on practical aspects of the cooperation withn the Alliance (operations, etc.) Focus on contemporary contentious issues, especially upholding the capability to perform collective defense after 2014, operational activites of NATO, military transfromation, NATO financing (incl. burden-sharing). Discussion on NATO relations with third parties, including Russia, and other international organisations (UN, EU)/. Presentation of Polish input and involvement in NATO with assessing the results of it, as well as critical assessment of NATO achievements in contect of its further evolution.

- changes on strategic level (debates on NATO's future in the early 90.; new tasks and activities, adaptation of civilian and military structures, nuclear policy)

- out of area missions - Balkans (Bosnia, Kosovo, FYROM); other activities

- external relations and enlargement issue (NACC, PfP, EAPC, NATO relations with Russia and Ukraine, MD, process of enlargement and integration of new members, including NSIP; relations with the rinternational organisatrions - WEU, EU, UN)

VI-IX -NATO from 9/11 to March 2014 (Global phase)

- strategic evolution (changes in NATO goals and tasks and military transformation: response to 9/11, decisions of Prague summit 2002 and transformation program - PCC, NRF, specialisation of allies; stategic debate - Prague, Riga, Bucharest, Strassbourg/Kehl and Lisbon summits , strategic concept of 2010; nucelar policy and anti-missile projects - evolution of deterrence posture

- NATO operations (NATO fight against terrorism, NATO in Afghanistan, in Iraq, other NATO missions, debates on Global NATO)

- external relations (PfP evolution after 9/11, relations with Russia, Ukraine and Georgia, realtions with non-European partners - key issues and problems; relations with other organisations: EU, UN, AU, GCC; issue of enlargement adnopen door policy in years 2001-2014)

X-XII - NATO after 2014 (Going home phase)

- strategic level - new priorities - going back to roots: collective defense in Europe); new initiatives and their implementation (Newport, Warsaw, Brussels summits) key issues - burden sharing, the state of affairs in transatlantic relations under Trump administration

- operations: the significance of out-of-area missions in current NATO practice, NATO in Afganistan, the Balkans, Iraq, other forms of engagement

- external relations (NATO - Russia relations, partnerships evolution, relations with Ukraine and Georgia, with non-European states, enlargement issue after 2014; NATO - EU cooperation; contact with other international organisations)

XIII-XIV Poland in NATO

- reasons for membership - Polish national security interests and NATO

- Polish involvement in NATO activities: operations, military transformation and adaptation programs, engagement in NATO cooperation with external partners and enlargement process)

- assessment of results and achievements of Poland within NATO framework

Participant should be able to define the alliance and to know basic classifications and typologies of alliances and main theoretical concepts related to them. Should be able to use effectively these theoretical tools to analyse NATO case. Should have substantial knowledge on NATO functioning, main activities and actions as well as main challenges for the Alliance. Should be able to define interests of members states, including Poland, their position on key problems in intra-alliance cooperation and be able to formulate prognosis of NATO further evolution and its role in international relations. That should improve his/her skills and capabilities to analyse international security environment.
