The main goal of the course is to present chosen aspects of European civilisation's history, with a special emphasis on the events and ideas that influenced the shape of contemporary Europe.

The main goal of the course is to present chosen aspects of European civilisation's history, with a special emphasis on the events and ideas that influenced the shape of contemporary Europe as well as it's position on the global scene. Such an approach should enable students to better comprehend how the past influences European politics, society and culture. Moreover, it should enhance their understanding of the ideas behind European integration project, which in the socio-cultural sphere focuse around the concept of European identity.

The course is addressed to MA-level students and draws on their knowledge on social and cultural history of Europe gained during their undergraduate studies.

At the end of a teaching process a student will:

1. know and understand

- chosen methods and tools for describing social structures and processes,

- social and cultural problems of contemporary Europe.

- social, economic and cultural changes undergoing in Europe

2. be able to

- prepare an oral presentation discussing chosen aspects of European studies according to academic standards.

- take a part in a discussion.

Written exam: kowledge of the course material (10 multiple-choice questions and 2 short answer questions i.e. 2/3 of a grade) and chosen readings (2 shorts answer questions i.e. 1/3 of a grade).

In case of the on-line exams, students will be asked to write an essay based on suggested literature (a topic will be suggested by the lecturer, essays' lenght: 11.000-15.000 signs).

Moreover, a writing an essay option is also possible for students with a good attendance record, if the class consist of less than 40 students.
