Short description:

The aim of the course is to prepare students for teaching English to children with special emphasis on developing classroom work skills with children with different educational needs and to develop skills of teacher reflection as an element supporting teaching activities in working with children.

The course is designed for students who have basic methodological knowledge of language teaching. During the course, they develop their knowledge and skills by combining various theoretical concepts with educational practice.

Full description:

This is a course that combines theoretical and practical elements. During the classes, students read the literature on the subject, observe the lessons and discuss issues together. Some of the classes will be conducted in kindergartens and schools.

The programme addresses the following topics:

- Developing an atmosphere for cooperation and motivating children to learn the language.

- Organising work in English lessons

- Working with children at different language levels and with different educational needs

- Introducing language learning strategies (how to learn)

- Creating teaching materials for children's language teaching

- Use and role of the native and foreign languages

- Approach to language errors

- Assessment

- The role of reflection in the work of a language teacher

Learning outcomes:

In terms of knowledge the student knows and understands:

1. strategies and methods of working with children with different educational needs in English language teaching

2. different types of teaching materials and the basis for their adaptation to the different needs of children

3. different approaches and ways of assessing children's language

4. different approaches to language errors

5. ways of supporting and motivating children in the language learning process

In terms of skills, the student can:

1. plan language teaching activities and methods of assessing the language of children with different educational needs

2. is able to plan activities in the classroom to support different language learning strategies

3. can assess the usefulness of teaching materials, including authentic materials and textbooks, and adapt them to the diverse needs of children

4. is able to reflect on his/her own and other learning activities during a foreign language lesson and to plan corrective action

In terms of social skills the student is ready to:

1. to deepen their knowledge of teaching children

2. improve their knowledge of their own language skills

3. reflect on the social importance of their knowledge, work and skills
