Prerequisites (description):

The aim of this course is to develop the knowledge and reinforce the skills gained by the students within ELT Methodology courses and other related subjects and provide practical experience in classroom teaching.

Short description:

The aim of this course is to get students acquainted with the basic notions concerning teaching English to young learners by giving them opportunities to discuss and reflect on observed lessons - both those taught by experienced mentor teachers in real classroom situations and samples of recorded English lessons.

Full description:

The aim of this course is

• to get students acquainted with the basic notions concerning teaching English to young learners by giving them opportunities to observe lessons taught by experienced mentor teachers in real classroom situations and by exposing them to samples of recorded English lessons;

• to encourage students to avoid overgeneralisations and focus on a particular task by taking notes and completing observation sheets while observing lessons;

• to help students acquire the practical skills of evaluating and giving feedback to the observed lessons and gain confidence in expressing their opinion on the observed lessons;

• to help students understand and reflect upon the teaching and learning processes through numerous lesson observation tasks and in-class discussions as well as reflections contained in blog entries;

• to help students reflect on their own teaching.

Learning outcomes:

Knowledge

On completion of the course the student:

- while observing lessons, recognizes the techniques learnt during Methodology courses;

- knows the rules of proper behaviour during lesson observation;

- knows the most effective methods and techniques used in teaching English to young learners;

- knows how to adapt ELT materials to suit her/his learners’ needs and abilities.

Skills

On completion of the course the student:

- can plan and describe the lesson;

- can organize a lesson in primary school (grades 1-3);

- can use various teaching aids in her/his teaching;

- can create new teaching aids to the planned lessons;

- can apply the knowledge gained during the course while working with children in the English lessons;

- can reflect on her/his own teaching;

- can choose and adapt the teaching materials used in the classroom and adjust them to the learners’ needs;

- can observe the lessons, reflect on them and draw conclusions concerning work with children.

Attitudes

On completion of the course the student:

- is able to reflect both on the conducted and observed lessons;

- is ready to give advice to her/his colleagues;

- appreciates the significance of self-reflection and feedback in the teaching profession;

- creates lesson plans on her/his own;

- reflects on her/his own teaching;

- is able to adjust teaching methods and techniques to various educational contexts.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

To pass the course the student has to:

• Write a blog on their teaching practice

• Comment on others’ posts

• Provide a Word document with all the entries

• Attend classes

• Participate actively in the classes

Practical placement:

90 hours of the teaching practice, including observation, microteaching, preparing a CLIL unit and teaching CLIL lesssons.
