Short description:

The aim of the course is familiarizing students with child’s language education in linguistic, didactic and psychological aspects. Student will learn about theoretical basis of language acquisition as well as goals, didactic methods and curricula content concerning early education.

Full description:

Theoretical basis of child’s language acquisition. Language and social context, differentiating forms of text depending on their functions and interlocutor or reader. Language as the platform of child’s experience integration. Selected language teaching theories at elementary level. Perception of different texts (fiction, non-fiction, iconic), creating texts (oral and written), new language skills necessary for communication process. Different forms of text. Developing children interest in literature. Selected issues connected with language eduaction of bilingual children and children with special educational needs. Reading, writing, communication, working with text in early education - the teacher’s folder.

Learning outcomes:

- student is expected to know traditional and modern reading and writing teaching methods,

- student is expected to know the most important rules and tools for processing a text as well as vocabulary, collocations and syntactic exercises,

- student is expected to know objectives, rules and methods of grammar and spelling teaching in the first three years of primary school,

- student is able to plan the class activities in language education,

- student is able to build a scenario of integrated activity including language content,

- student is able to assess student’s text (oral and written).

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

In order to pass this course student will be expected to submit one set of lesson plans concerning one chosen key skill in the field of language education (speaking, reading, writing).

The set:

- should combine 3 to 5 working-days with a group of children selected by you (form kindergarten do 3rd grade) (3 p.),

- should be in accordance with the national standards applicable to the country where the lessons will take place (3 p.),

- the objective of these lessons should focus on one of the key language skills, with respect to the other two skills (3 p.),

- the description of every lesson should contain: clearly stated objectives for the students, daily description of the activities carried out, the methods and class organization, any necessary materials or equipment and methods of evaluating students’ achievements as well as the teacher’s effectiveness (18 p.),

- should be original and based on contemporary children’s texts (3 p.).
