ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): (not available) Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.
Language: English
Type of course:

obligatory courses

Short description:

The main goal of the course is to teach the students how to follow the Scientific Method (posing a research question, forming a hypothesis, presenting independent, dependent and controlled variables, conducting an experiment, discussing results, drawing conclusions). Students will gain some practical and theoretical knowledge of science teaching. They will learn how to become passionate about the subject and how to use this passion to create inspiring lessons.

Full description:

The main elements of the course will include: theoretical basis of the Scientific Method, differences between science and pseudoscience, designing inspiring lessons without a professional laboratory (using low-cost equipment), multidisciplinary character of science education, different teaching strategies, inspiring children to independently pursue research projects, using resources such as science centers, libraries, etc., reading scientific articles, discussing new trends in science education: STEM, STEAM, Recommendations of the European Parliament and of the Council on key competences for lifelong learning, etc..

Learning outcomes:

Students will be expected to:

- know the Scientific Method

- know safety rules during science lessons

- know how to create a low-cost laboratory

- know how to design an experiment which is meaningful for teaching scientific concepts,

- show some passion for teaching a chosen scientific topic

Students will be able to:

- plan an independent research unit or a long term research project

- build a scenario of integrated activity including science education

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

The course assessment consists of two parts:

1) active participation + teaching a chosen scientific topic to the peers +

conducting an experiment (or experiments) using the Scientific Method

2) submitting one set of lesson plans concerning one chosen key skill in the field of science education

The set:

- should combine 3 to 5 working days with a group of children selected by you (form kindergarten do 3rd grade) (3 p.),

- should be in accordance with the national standards applicable to the country where the lessons will take place (3 p.),

- the objective of these lessons should focus on one of the simple laboratory skills, and small individual research project (3 p.),

- the description of every lesson should contain: clearly stated objectives for the students, daily description of the activities carried out, the methods and class organization, any necessary materials or equipment and methods of evaluating students’ achievements as well as the teacher’s effectiveness (18 p.),

- should be original and based on contemporary science knowledge (3 p.).
