Short description:

The aim of the course is acquainting students with the basic knowledge of music within the esthetic and theoretical context as well as their sensitizing to music. While performing their own musical activities: movements with music, playing the percussion, singing, listening to and creating the elementary music (Orff methods) the students will be able to acquaint themselves with music both as listeners and performers. Their acquired experience and skills will allow for deeper understanding problems connected with music and its performing. The musical knowledge will also be discussed in the context of musical development of a child. The repertoire learned during the classes students will be able to use in their work with children.

I Music as the object of esthetic experience

Multi-level and multi-dimension of music influence on different spheres of human functioning. Personal predispositions of selecting music. Familiarising with valuable music and knowledge of it as the basis of musical taste. The musical environment of a child and its needs, the functions of music in life and musical choices of an adult.

II Theory and musical practice.

The knowledge of sounds, their noting and reading as well as the ways to organise the musical material. Sounds, as acoustic occurrence and as music material. Stave, clefs, graphical noting of the length and pitch of sounds. Basic terms of tone music: scale, gamma, tone, tripplesound, harmonic triada, cadence. Sounds within sound-space correlations; musical pulse, metrical accents, intervals, consonance and dysonance, melody, harmony-musical understanding of terms. The exemplary kinds of accompaniments based on functional harmony. Music in modal scales, a-tonal music. Playing the percussion instruments melodic and non-melodic, singing and movement with music as the illustration of the discussed theory and developing the performing skills of music by ear and from notes.The rules of construction of musical pieces; contrast, identity, similarity. Basic terms about the musical forms, poliphonic and homophonic forms – differentiating these composing techniques by ear. Listening and analysis of the selected examples of classical music ( audio or video versions). The differences between the valued music and the one-season hits.

III The role of musical skills of a teacher in creating the child’s needs to experience music . The integrating values of music and musical games in the process of upbringing and educating children.

The Knowledge

A student knows

- different kinds of valued music and the criteria of its assessment

- selected exemplary pieces from various epochs

- basic terms and musical vocabulary

- musical noting within the clef

- the stages and conditions of musical development of a human

- educational and illuminating values of learning music

- dimensions and manifestations of integration through music

A student can:

- listen attentively to music and discuss the interdependence about the means of composing selection and the sound and expression of the heard piece

- recognise by ear the form-creative construction of the piece

- perform fro notes the rhythm on percussion, present it by movement and read by tataisation

- perform on chromatic bells the melody from notes

- sing the songs and present the motor games from children’s repertoire learned during the classes

- select the relevant musical activities to the selected aim of classes with children

Social competence

A student:

- is aware of the significance of his own competence- including the musical ones- for the effective and satisfying work with children

- works independently to excel his own musical skills

- can work and co-operate in a team, taking different roles.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

While gaining credit the following will be considered:

- active participation in classes

- accounting for absences in the form agreed with the lecturer

- gaining credit for separate musical activities

- positive marks from two written tests checking the knowledge of the problems discussed during the classes and from suggested publication
