Short description: |
The course focuses on the practical preparation for the role of a YL teacher. It will aim at helping the trainees to appreciate the significant role of a YL teacher and highlight the teaching skills necessary in primary education and the differences between teaching pre-primary and primary children. During the course the trainees will get to know a variety of approaches and techniques suitable for young learners. The course will create an environment in which trainees will practice their teaching skills and try out the effectiveness of their teaching materials. They will also be made familiar with resources, materials and textbooks available. The course will develop trainees’ critical thinking skills by guiding them in evaluating, selecting and adapting available coursebooks and materials, as well as to develop their abilities to select, prioritise and grade language content and skills appropriate for children. |

The following list of topics will be covered during the course in reference to teaching English to children between 5 and 10 years of age and with respect to the developmental needs and abilities of preschool and lower primary learners: 1. Developing listening and speaking 2. Developing reading and writing 3. Drama and puppets 4. Art and craft activities 5. Projects with young learners 6. Songs, chants and rhymes 7. Storytelling and children’s literature 8. Testing and assessment 9. Materials’ evaluation and selection criteria |

Learning outcomes: |
After the course the student: Knowledge: -knows a variety of techniques which are suitable for young learners at pre-primary and lower primary level and provide practice in the four language skills - is familiar with the developmental differences of young learners and can relate them to effective teaching of the four language skills - knows the principles of using drama, art and craft, projects, songs, rhymes and storytelling with young learners -knows and understands the methods of testing and assessment in the early years language classes -knows the principles of lesson planning and planning longer projects with children Skills: - evaluates and selects teaching materials for different age groups - adapts materials and grades language content and skills appropriate for young learners -plans and describes microteaching sessions and whole lessons focused on skills’ development -plans storytelling lessons, and projects with children Other competences: - appreciates the significance of their future role as a young learner teacher in the linguistic development of the learners - is able to independently plan and carry out a sequence of several lessons - reflects on their own teaching during their Teaching Practice and during micro-teaching sessions as well as while observing others at work (video and Teaching Practice) |
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: |
The course ends with a pass when the following course requirements are fulfilled: - Young Learners’ Teacher’s Pack submitted twice in the semester - One microteaching presentation - Reading assignments book chapters and/or articles for every class - A mid-term test and a final test with a min 65% result The participants of the course are allowed to be absent twice during the course. |
