In this course, we focus on community education and social animation as special forms of action in local community, based on the mobilization of the local community’s potential.

The subject of the course is social and cultural theory and practice of local community mobilisation. It focuses on community education in a broad sense: involving the local community, school, local government, non-government organisations, church etc., to solve social, educational and cultural problems in the community. The topics are discussed in reference to social development issues, social change as well as the processes of globalisation, regionalism and multiculturalism. The goals are also to discuss the role of the leader in the local community, community educator, and animator. The key concepts: local community, small homeland, local tradition and culture, social and cultural potential (capital) of the community, social activity, as social action.

By the end of the course, student will be able to:

- use their knowledge of the essential theoretical concepts and conceptual framework of community education to prepare and implement their own project;

- prepare a social diagnosis and examine the possibilities of work with the community;

- identify, analyze and use the educational potential of place;

- critically analyze contemporary changes and challenges in local communities

- discuss the role of social memory in the local community, its significance for the present and propose socio-educational activities focused on local social memory

- attendance (20%)

- short written assignments (2-3 p.), including case study analysis and problem-solving papers (80%)
