  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Prerequisites (description):

The main aim of the course is to prepare students to the job of English language teaching both in the kindergarten and primary school. During the course students learn various English language teaching methods, conventional and non-conventional. While learning about each of the methods, they get acquainted with language theories and learning/teaching theories.

Short description:

The course aims to equip students with the knowledge on wide spectrum of English language teaching methods (conventional and non-conventional). Consequently they are able to select and adjust methods and techiniques to particular groups of learners. Within each method students learn its theoretical background, refering both to the theory of language and theory of learning. While learning about particular methods they develop their knowledge about teaching language skills, teaching vocabulary. teching pronunciation and grammar within the given method.

The following issues are involved in the course:

- the beginning of fereign language teaching (J.A. Komensky);

- first methods of English language teaching (Grammar Translation Method, Direct Method, Audiolingual Method);

- Cognitive Approach in foreign language teaching (N.Chomsky);

- humanistic approach in foreign language teaching;

- selected non-conventional methods (TPR, Silent Way, Suggestopedia);

- Communicative Approach in contemporary English language teaching;

- niew discoveries in neuroscience and foreign language teaching.

Learning outcomes:

Knowledge

After completing the course student:

- possesses knowledge about English language teaching methods, both conventional and non-conventional;

- within each of the discussed methods possesses the basic knowledge about the theory of language and theory of learning;

- possesses knowledge about the possibilities to use the methods in various language groups.

Skills

After completing the course student:

- evaluates the appropriacy of a method in a given teaching situation;

- is able to select the elements from particular methods for a given language group;

- explains the differences in various approaches and methods while teaching vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation.

Social competences

After completing the course student:

- shares knowledge and reflections about various English language teaching methods with other students and teachers;

- analyzes and evaluates critically the possibilities of using a given method in various language groups.

Requirements:

1. Systematic reading of compulsory literature.

2. Active participation in discussions during the classes.

3. 2 absences allowed

4. Final test at the end of the semester.
