ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 4.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Short description:

Course is devoted to the analysis of the functioning of the labour market at the national level (in an open economy setting) and at the international level. It explains the dependence of the functioning of the national labour market in the international context, with particular emphasis on migration.

Introductory classes, describing the basic problems and theories that explain the open labour market, take the form of a lecture combined with a discussion. Further classes, devoted to particular problems of the impact of the international environment of the imperfect labour market and adequate public policies will be used to present student presentations (prepared in two-person teams). The same teams are working on the paper on the same topic.

Learning outcomes:

Knowledge

Student:

- knows the phenomena occurring in the labour market in a global scale, as well as in individual countries or EU,

- knows and understands the basic theories related to the functioning of the labour market within an open economy, in particular to the links between the labour market, international trade and migration,

- knows and understands how these theories explain the interdependence of national labour markets,

- knows the basic facts regarding the domestic labour market, knows which of trends are related to the opening of the national economy,

- knows key theories of international migration,

- knows the methods of empirical verification of all the above theories.

Skills

Student:

- can find theoretical and empirical literature referring to selected problems of the labour market at the international scale and is able to critically analyse it,

- can collect data on the international labour market and migration and explain them using statistical tools and using the knowledge of theory,

- knows how to identify problems that arise on the labour market under the influence of the opening of the national economy and is able to analyse them,

- can anticipate changes in international dependencies in response to changes in the domestic labour market, as well as changes arising on the domestic labour market under the influence of international links,

- can present an analysis of a labour market problem in an open economy in a concise presentation.

Social competences

Student:

- is able to discuss and present topic in the form of a presentation and a paper during group work

- is prepared to participate in public debates on these topics raised during classes, understanding the importance of substantive arguments,

- is aware of the dynamic changes taking place on the labour market in the context of international cooperation and

knows that it is necessary to supplement knowledge in this field for the preservation of own competences

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

In order to get a credit for the course it is necessary to fulfil the following conditions:

- attendance (max. 2 absences allowed)

- participation in discussions (up to 10 points)

- handing-in of a paper of 12-20 pages, prepared in 2-person teams (evaluation - up to 30 points)

- presentation of a paper (semester work) prepared in a 2-person team as above (graded up to 20 points)

- final exam (test, graded up to 40 points)
