Master's seminars

Short description:

1. The aim of the course is to allow students to prepare a master's thesis that meets all the formal requirements set for such works. The expected result is a master's thesis.

2. The topics of the course will include economic modeling (at the micro and macro level), in which demographic aspects (such as migration, fertility, etc.) are taken into account. Both the theoretical aspects of the models and practical problems appearing during evaluation and estimation will be analyzed.

3. The first classes will be devoted to discussing the requirements for master's theses and the scope of the subject of the seminar. During subsequent classes participants will present literature reviews, progress of their work and their results.

4. The classes are intended for students of master's studies.

Full description:

The aim of the seminar is to prepare students to create a master's thesis. The subjects of the theses are chosen by students from a broad spectrum of economic models (at the micro- and macro level), in which demographic variables are taken into account (or modeled). In particular, the subject of MA theses may be:

1. Economic modeling of migration processes - both at the level of individual decisions and at the aggregate level;

2. The influence of families on functioning of the labor market;

3. The effect of fertility on the level of wages of women and men;

4. The consequences of population aging for the labor market, pension systems, etc.

Bibliography:

The required and recommended literature will depend on the specific topic of the master's thesis and will be specified during the course.

Learning outcomes:

After completing the seminar, the student:

- has in-depth knowledge of theoretical literature as well as economic modeling (methods, techniques) in the field of his choice;

- knows the tools for describing processes at the meeting of economics and demography;

- knows how to interpret and explain the mechanisms of mutual influence of demographic and market aspects observed in the economy;

- is able to use theoretical knowledge to describe and analyze the causes, the course and/or the consequences of processes on the verge of economics and demography, formulate hypotheses and select the method of analysis and data appropriate for their verification;

- can analyze the causes and the course of processes and phenomena at the meeting of economics and demography;

- can forecast or model processes at the meeting of economics and demography with the use of advanced quantitative and econometric methods;

- has the ability to prepare a written (master's) thesis in Polish or English;

- has the ability to prepare oral presentations in Polish in the selected field;

- can critically complement the knowledge in the chosen field
