  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Short description:

This class aims at preparing students to write their graduate thesis to obtain the master’s degree. Topics discussed during the seminar focus on the interaction between political and economic spheres (institutions, actors, processes). The analysed topics can be approached from both micro and macro perspective. Both quantitative and qualitative methods can be used.

Full description:

This class aims at preparing students to write their graduate thesis to obtain the master’s degree. Topics discussed during the seminar focus on the interaction between economics and politics, both from micro and macro perspective. Students will make themselves acquainted with a broad spectrum of issues related to the interaction between economic sphere and political sphere; they will be exposed to different methodological approaches that are used to study this research area, as well as different methods to measure the impact of economic and political institutions.

During the seminar students will be asked to discuss several journal articles, present their views on what they read as well as present parts of their theses. The seminar is taught in Polish. However, since the majority of articles discussed are written in English, students should read in English fluently.

In the winter semester students choose the topics for their theses and are evaluated based on the work they present during classes. In the second semester, students are evaluated based on the progress in their theses.

The seminar is designed for students at their 4th/5th year of studies. Therefore, they are required to know all the material covered during the first two years of studies.

Learning outcomes:

Expertise and cognizance

Upon the seminar completion a student knows the concept of institutions. He/she has knowledge about various applications of institutions in the economic discourse and recognizes the pros and cons of different approaches to study the importance of economic and political institutions from the economic perspective. A student knows the requirements that are demanded from the master’s thesis.

Skills

Upon the seminar completion a student is able to analyze the relationships between various socio-economic factors while paying due attention to their complexity and multifaceted character. A student is able to design and plan his/her own research and knows pros and cons of various methodologies that he may apply. He/she is able to pose a research question and provide an answer to it. He/she is able to interpret the results of his/her work as well as the results from other studies and draw conclusions from them. A student is able to present the results of his work in front of his/her colleagues and take part in the discussion on the results presented by others. A student is able to prepare a master’s thesis in accordance with appropriate requirements.

Other competences

Upon the seminar completion a student is able to cooperate with other colleagues. He/she is able to recognize the need of constant acquiring new knowledge and skills. A student understands ethical dilemmas connected with conducting social researches. He/she is able to find good ways to organize his work efficiently
