Short description:

Study of the development of financial institutions, the emergence of modern financial systems (primarily in a Polish context, but also in a comparative context). Economic and political context of banking systems evolution. The legal and regulatory framework of the money market.

Full description:

The emergence of modern commercial banking in the 19th century. World economy, national economic policy and models of commercial banks.

Banking systems: institutional-legal and organizational frameworks; banking system stability as a public wealth; the banking safety net. Historical financial crises.

The origins and evolution of central banks. The monetary policy of central banks 19-20 th century. The monetary system after Bretton Woods: new paradigms in economic policy, new goals of central bank policy.

Banking at the close of the 20th century. The financial capitalism, liberalization of financial markets, deregulations of banking systems. Changes in the banking systems of the East-European countries. Banking crises and restoration of banking systems. Global financial crisis 2007-2010: a subprime mortgage crisis; a “systemic risk”; the financial contagion; the impact of the crisis by transmitting the financial shocks to the whole global economy.

Learning outcomes:

KNOWLEDGE

Upon completing the course a student understands the process of forming of the historical and the modern financial institutions; the legal and regulatory framework of the banking systems. The student knows the theories and models explaining the reasons and mechanism of financial, banking and currency crises; understands the specifics of the financial and banking crises and their importance to the process of changes in the banking systems and to their legislative-institutional environment in the historical perspective.

SKILLS

A student should be able to interpret and formulate his own conclusions, based on critical analysis of sources, views of different authors, premises and arguments; to explain the influence of economic changes on the character and functions of financial institutions as well as the importance of these institutions for the development of the economies. The student is able to: perform an analysis of the financial, banking and currency crises; explain the mechanism of infecting and transferring the crises among the sectors of economy and the financial institutions.

The course teaches to independently analyze problems, make public statements, discuss, criticize and defend one`s own views. Student should be able to critically analyze sources, interpret and formulate independent conclusions.
