ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 3.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Short description:

The aim of this course is to present the process of collecting and processing data for the use of official statistics. The role of definitions, methods of obtaining and limitations of collected data will be discussed. We will also discuss the influence of the data used on the results and conclusions of economic analysis.

Full description:

Plan:

1. Legal bases and good practices of the European Statistical System. Development, production and dissemination of European statistics.

2. Law on official statistics. Statistical confidentiality. Anonymisation

3. Aims and role of public statistics in public policy, business and research. Programme of Public Statistical Research.

4. Administrative data (ZUS, KRUS, MF), full surveys (Census), representative surveys. Weights in representative surveys. Planning, design and implementation of full and representative surveys.

5. Databases: Eurostat, ECB, IMF, ILO, BIS, UN, OECD, World Bank, CSO

6. Quality and comparability in official statistics, the problem of seasonality. Data errors, non-response and other data gaps.

7. National accounts (ESA 2010), satellite national accounts, NTTA

8. Indices, ratios and other measures of official statistics

9. surveys conducted by National Statistical Institutes (e.g. LFS, BBGD). Surveys conducted by other units (e.g. BZGD, Social Diagnosis, Rapid Monitoring, 10. Eurobarometer, ISSP, ESS)

11. Surveys of enterprises

12. Household surveys

13. Data cleaning, reliability of results (sample size, purpose of the survey, purpose of the self-report survey), sensitive questions. Rotating panels.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

The credit is based on a project. In addition, the student is expected to complete the LFS questionnaire, HBS booklet and Time Use diary independently and draw their own conclusions about the data collection processes.
