Short description:

This course will provide training in biopsychosocial aspects of old age with a particular attention given to neurocognitive aging.

Learning outcomes:

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

− critically appraise theory and research of the biopsychosocial aspects of aging;

− identify and describe the influence of aging on physical, cognitive and mental health; measure clinical components of aging with relevant equipment and standardized assessments;

− discuss intervention strategies to mitigate psychological aging.

Full description:

This course will provide a graduate-level training in biopsychosocial aspects of old age with a focus on neurocognitive aging. We will cover global trends in population aging, theory of the psychology of aging and research methods to study aging. This course will also give an overview of the biological and physical aspects of aging and their relationship to cognitive and brain health in older adults. We will cover cognitive disorders in older adults and understand the psychosocial and emotional components of aging. We will also explore cognitive resilience vs. reserve and current intervention strategies to mitigate cognitive decline in aging.
