Led by an anthropologist with almost 20 years of experience in ethnographic work, this course will give students a broad but rooted in empirical examples understanding of what ethnography is – as a method, a practice, an ethical position in qualitative research, and as a writing genre. Students will be exposed to classic texts but also discussions around subjectivity, positionality, colonial domination, and power within doing ethnography, which gave raise to innovative and creative approaches such as auto-ethnography, intimate ethnography, reciprocal ethnography and/or visual ethnography. The course’s aim is to equip students with tools and self-confidence allowing them to embark upon own small ethnographic project. |
