Overview: This course is the first half of the Business Economics course. It will cover essential economics topics that are critical to understanding global industries and the behavior of both individual firms and entire industry sectors. Specific topics will be determined based upon previous economics education and knowledge of the students in the class.

Structure: Classes will be based upon a lecture. Since students come from many different nations, the class will be enriched by students sharing the perspectives about economic concepts of their own countries and cultures. Therefore, student comments and discussion of the material is strongly encouraged. Students may ask questions at any time, but must raise their hands and be called upon first.

Grading: Classroom attendance and behavior: 40%

Final exam 30%

Paper 30%

Class attendance is required, and attendance will be recorded both at the beginning of each session and after breaks. Although class discussion is perfectly appropriate, private discussions during the class are extremely disruptive and are thus not allowed. Disruptive behaviors, such as talking to one another during class, will result in grade reductions.

During the final class meeting, there will be a final exam based upon material covered during class meetings. The exam will require that students draw, explain and interpret graphs; define economic terms; analyze economic situations, etc.

A short paper will also be required. Students must submit their papers via email directly to Dr. Steagall by 5pm (Warsaw time) on March 14, 2008. Late papers will be penalized at the rate of 25% of the maximum possible score per day (e.g., a perfect paper that is one day late will receive a grade of only 75%). Details of the paper will be provided later in the course.
