Short description: |
The aim of the course is to provide knowledge in the analysis of financial institutions, taking into account their position on the financial market. Institutions are analyzed both at the macro level (in the country and globally) and at the level of individual enterprises, with particular focus on banks. |

The seminar involves conducting an economic analysis of selected financial institutions. The scope of topics covers the following areas: 1. Economic analysis of the financial sector based on data from the European Central Bank, World Bank Database (e.g. Global Financial Development Database), National Bank of Poland and the Polish Financial Supervision Authority) 2. Economic analysis of credit institutions based on information regarding the banking sector in Poland, using both aggregated data (data available on the website of the Office of the Financial Supervision Authority and the National Bank of Poland) and individual data (data available on the banks' websites and in Monitor Polski B); 3. Economic analysis of insurance institutions based on information regarding the insurance sector in Poland, using both aggregated data (data available on the website of the Office of the Financial Supervision Authority and the National Bank of Poland) and individual data (data available on the websites of insurance institutions and in Monitor Polski B); 4. Economic analysis of investment funds based on information regarding the investment fund sector in Poland, using both aggregated and individual data; 5. Economic analysis of investment companies based on information regarding the brokerage house sector in Poland, using both aggregated and individual data. |

Learning outcomes: |
After completing the course, the student: - Recognizes the types and functions of economic analysis of financial institutions; - knows the sources of information from which data for the economic analysis of financial institutions are obtained; - is able to determine the specific nature of the activities of individual financial institutions and is able to distinguish them based on financial statements; - explains the changes in the structure of the financial intermediation sector that have occurred in recent years in Poland and around the world; - can prepare written analytical reports regarding, among others: the structure of financial intermediation in various countries, the interdependence between the measures of development of the financial sector and the real economy, both individually and collectively; - is able to draw correct conclusions based on the analysis of financial sector measures in various countries, using descriptive statistics tools (e.g. mean, median and measures of sample diversity); - is able to draw correct conclusions based on the analysis of interdependence between financial sector measures and the real economy, using statistical tools (e.g. linear correlation coefficient, linear regression); - presents the structure of financial statements of individual financial institutions based on aggregated, consolidated and individual data and prepares written analytical reports; - identifies factors leading to changes in the structure of financial statements of financial institutions over time; - is able to assess the financial indicators of a financial intermediary, taking into account reference data (e.g. average data for the sector). |
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: |
Continuous work during classes, performing analysis during classes at the designated time and submitting written analytical reports developed in accordance with the criteria specified during classes, and attendance at classes (one unexcused absence is allowed). The final grade for the exercises depends on the substantive level of the analytical reports (the criteria are specified during the classes). Percentage ranges and grades assigned to them (applies to both lecture and exercises): 0-59% - 2 (insufficient) 60-65% - 3 (sufficient) 66-74% - 3+ (sufficient plus) 75-84% – 4 (good) 85-90% – 4+ (good plus) 91-100% - 5 (very good) |
