In this course, participants will learn about practical language tools and skills that will allow them to communicate effectively in English in a business environment. They will practise a wide range of English language speaking and writing skills, including business email writing, oral presentations, and holding meetings and negotiations. Communicating effectively in English is essential in today’s business world. This entails a range of writing and speaking communicative skills. Therefore, the scope of this course includes practising skills related to correspondence, negotiation, data analysis, information summarizing and presenting. Session 1: Introduction – communicating in English in today’s business world Session 2: Principles of English speaking and writing skills Session 3: Written correspondence – English for emails (1) Session 4: Written correspondence – English for emails (2) Session 5: Oral presentations – the start, keeping your audience’ attention, the finish (1) Session 6: Oral presentations – presenting information and data in PowerPoint (2) Session 7: Business meetings in English, negotiations |

Learning outcomes: |
By the end of the course, participants will know about: - English language communication conventions; - basic principles of English speaking and writing skills - how to write English business email - how to present oral information effectively in English - conventions of business meetings and negotiations held in English. Participants will be able to: - recognize the correct written and spoken forms typical for business English; - draft an email in business English; - deliver a short presentation in English; - discuss a topic according to business English conversations. |
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: |
Grading– attendance and mid-term assignments Successful course completion – 50% or 50 points out of 100 Attendance monitored (minimum 5 sessions) Max. number of points: 30 7 sessions – 30 6 sessions – 20 5 sessions – 10 Below 5 – 0 Mid-term assignments – two quizzes (after session 4 and 6) Max. number of points: 70 (each quiz bears 35 points) Quiz 1 – 35 Quiz 2 – 35 Final grade: 90-100 points – 5 80-89 points – 4,5 70-79 points – 4 60-69 points – 3.5 50-59 points – 3 Below 50 points – 2 Re-sit exam - another quiz |
