Prerequisites (description): | Dedicated to postgraduate students of library science. The student has basic knowledge about the functions of various types of libraries. The student communicates in Polish in speech and writing. |

Short description: |
Sociological characteristics of theoretical aspects of modern society and its attitude towards books, libraries and mass media. The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the characteristics of modern society and concepts of the mass, information and network society. Students get to know data on the use books, libraries and ICT in society. On this background, various aspects of the different types of libraries and their services are considered. Classes are held in the form of lectures illustrated with multimedia presentations. |

The following specific issues will be addressed: Part 1. Mass society - mass society, mass culture, popular culture - mass media and mass communication - media usage in Europe and in Poland - social diversity of media use - readership - public libraries as mass libraries Part 2. Information society - the origins and definitions of the information society - features and functions of the information society - digital division, digital exclusion - information competences and their levels - information society research (DESI) - libraries and their functions in the information society Part 3. Network society - definition of network and network society - network society theory - development of the Internet network in Poland (households, enterprises, schools) - computerization of libraries - open access and library contribution to OA - library as a network node - concepts of the library as a third place, meeting place, safe and therapeutic place, participatory library - training digital competences in libraries - foreign and domestic examples |

Learning outcomes: |
KNOWLEDGE Has general knowledge in the field of book and information science. Knows and understands basic methods of analysis and interpretation of various cultural products proper for selected traditions or research schools in the field of book and information science and the disciplines proper for library and information science. Knows and understands basic terms and rules concerning the protection of industrial and intellectual property, which are applied in library and information activities and in education. SKILLS Knows how to independently acquire knowledge and develop research skills in the field of book and information science under the guidance of a scientific tutor. Knows how to prepare typical oral presentations in Polish, and in a foreign language generally accepted as basic for book and information studies, with relation to detailed issues, utilizing basic theoretical projections and various sources. SOCIAL COMPETENCES Understands the need of permanent education. Is capable of cooperation and team-work, performing various roles is such activities. Is capable of appropriate distinction of priorities in the process of realization tasks set for himself and others. Correctly identifies and resolves dilemmas related to performing the jobs of librarian and information specialist. Participates in the cultural life, using various media and forms. |
