  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Short description:

The course deals with issues of general information ethics and professional ethics in the field of

librarianship and information services. We will discuss ethical aspects of the information society, ethical issues of the public sphere and values and dilemmas of librarians and information workers.

Full description:

The course offers an introduction to the terminology and main research trends in the fields of general and information ethics. We will discuss the social impact of information technologies, ethical problems regarding the internet, access to information, and control. Discussions regarding the public sphere will include the relation between the individual and the state and human rights such as freedom of speech and rights to privacy and anonymity. Discussions regarding the ethics of librarianship and information services will include the following issues: access to information, censorship, intellectual property, relations with library users, and professional codes of ethics for librarians and information workers.

Learning outcomes:

Students understand the fundamental terminology and concepts of general and professional ethics. They are capable of recognising and analysing ethical problems in the field of information and social communication as well as ethical problems typical for the professions of librarians and information workers.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Students take part in the discussions during the course. They prepare case studies of selected ethical problems and dilemmas.
