ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 4.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Short description:

Reading studies in interdisciplinary perspective. Methods and techniques of reading reasearch. Selected qualitative reading research - observations, visual ethnography, biometrics. Examples of reading research. Students' research projects concerning different reading-related topics.

Full description:

Training in qualitative reading research. Discussion on different qualitative techniques (observations, visual ethnography, biometrics) and their effectiveness in reading studies. The students, working in teams, develop and carry out a complete research projects, consisting of the following stages:

- definition of a project's goal and subject,

- literature review,

- development of a research tool (e.g. observation sheet),

- data collection and analysis,

- presentation of the results,

- conclusions and limitations.

A student knows:

- reading as an interdisciplinary research field,

- choice and development of selected research tools in reading studies,

- reading competences and behaviours of different groups of users.

A student can:

- develop and carry out a research project,

- define its goal, subject, reasearch problem and questions,

- find tools and techniques adequate for the goal,

- develop research tools,

- collect and analyse data,

- present conclusions and limitations of the study.

A student works as a team member.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

articipation and activities during classes (2 absences max).

Working in teams.

Project work, concluded with a final report.
