Short description:

The purpose of this course is to familiarise the students with the basics of source criticism within the context of ancient history. The students are to become familiar with how to read ancient sources in a critical fashion, understanding the positionality and biases of their authors and their genres. The classes will train them in assessing the historical information contained in a variety of sources and confronting them with secondary literature.

Learning outcomes:

Knowledge:

 The student knows the various kinds of primary sources that can be used in historical research.

 The student is able to define the key concepts of source criticism, such as ‘bias,’ ‘framing,’ ‘positionality,’ etc.

Skills:

 The student grasps the significance of primary sources for historical research.

 The student is able to offer a critique of a primary source, understanding its historical value as well as limitations.

 The student knows how to confront different kinds of sources and weigh their value against each other.

 The student knows how to balance primary and secondary sources, and how to use both of them effectively.
