ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 6.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Short description:

The aim of the subject is to:

• familiarize students with theoretical foundations of normative linguistics;

• equip students with the tools to independently evaluate the accuracy of the new linguistic phenomena;

• shape the skills of proper handling of lexis and phraseology and of creating stylistically correct statements.

Full description:

During the lecture, students:

• get to know basic terms of normative linguistics and the most important former and contemporary publications codifying the language standard;

• familiarize with the organizations institutionally dealing with language policy;

• recognize either opportunities for the Polish language, or dangers in a globalizing world;

• get acquainted with the typology and the mechanisms of language errors;

• become sensitive to aesthetic and ethic aspects of statements, rules of language courtesy, as well as social, aesthetic and cognitive values of the language;

• familiarize with basic terms of lexicology.

The class will be mainly devoted to developing the culture of language in the subjective sense - it’s about shaping the students’ ability to correctly (i.e. in accordance with the language standard) use the language in its lexical, phraseological and stylistic aspect. Under the teacher’s guidance, students will analyze fragments of contemporary texts and will carry out their lexical, phraseological and stylistic correction.

Learning outcomes:

Having finished the course, a student:

- uses the lexicon and phraseology in accordance with the socially approved rules of using lexical units;

- adjusts the selection of vocabulary to the circumstances, e.g. the recipients’ skills, their social function;

- expresses himself/herself clearly, convincingly, using rich vocabulary;

- recognizes the types of lexical errors and their mechanisms, describes them using the terms of normative linguistics;

- analyzes the contemporary Polish texts and performs the normative assessment of the vocabulary used, justifying his/her judgements;

- recognizes basic growth trends in the field of the contemporary Polish vocabulary;

- defines the basic terms of normative linguistics and uses them in the assessment of language phenomena;

- builds texts meeting the requirements of the ethics of speech, recognizes manipulation endeavours;

- uses the language in accordance with the principles of language courtesy, identifies trends in the Polish language courtesy;

- speaks Polish with the awareness that language is not only a tool of communication, but also the value of culture;

- demonstrates the concern of language, recognizes the phenomenon of vulgarization;

- while assessing the language, refers to the contemporary correctness and codification publications;

- defines and identifies types of formal and semantic relations between words;

- knows characteristics of different functional style

- is able to analyze texts representing these styles.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

-Two absences allowed in the semester.

- Having passed all tests carried out in class (eventually, at least 60%).

- Having passed the test concerning the lecture (at least 60%).

- The final oral exam.

Two absences per semester are allowed. Above this number (excluding cases immediately documented) there is no possibility to pass classes.
