Short description:

The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the theory of lexicology as well as to review the lexical phenomena in contemporary Polish language.

Full description:

Lexicology as linguistic discipline. Basic concepts (word, lexeme, lexical unit, criteria of separating lexical units). Vocabulary layers. Common-variety vocabulary. Stylistic and expressive word characteristics. Word meaning. Ingredients of the word meaning. Ways of describing the meaning by linguists. Concept of lexical connotations – their role in interpersonal communication. Modifications of the word meaning in the text. Description of the word meaning in dictionaries. Qualitative transformations in the Polish vocabulary: changes in word meanings in ancient and contemporary Polish; neutralization of stylistic and expressive characteristics in the contemporary Polish vocabulary. Quantitative transformations in the Polish vocabulary: words out of use, new words. Semantic relations between words: synonymy, antonymy, conversion, complementarity. Polysemy – the structure of meanings of ambiguous words. Polysemy and homonymy – theoretical problems. Types of homonyms. Ways of describing polysemy and homonymy in dictionaries. Frequent and infrequent words (use of statistical research in lexicology). Phraseologisms against the background of Polish vocabulary. Typologies of phraseological compounds. Main types of innovative procedures in modern phraseology: neo-semantization, formal modification and expansion. New idioms in Polish language (thematic fields and sources). Phraseology and cultural changes. Phraseological innovations in texts. Influence of foreign languages on ancient and contemporary Polish vocabulary. Growth trends of contemporary Polish vocabulary. Polish word-formation neologisms in the 21st century. Lexical creativity in Polish public discourse of the 21st century. Contemporary Polish vocabulary as the mirror of culture. Language picture of world in the Polish vocabulary. Valuating words in contemporary Polish language. Words – the media of scorn and disdain. Verbal aggression.

Learning outcomes:

A student:

- explains and assesses lexical phenomena in contemporary Polish language;

- defines and identifies types of formal and semantic relations between words;

- assigns words to semantic categories and places them on the map of vocabulary stratification;

- recognize relations between lexical and cultural changes.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Written test passed in the hall. Condition for receiving credit for a satisfactory grade is to get a total of at least 51% of the points.
