Methodology of linguistic studies – synchronous

obligatory courses

Students have completed the course in Polish Descriptive Grammar, as well as linguistic courses taught in previous years I-III (introduction to language studies, Polish descriptive grammar, historical grammar, culture of Polish Language). Previous knowledge from linguistic courses is essential.

Classroom

The lecture is dedicated to problems of contemporary linguistics. The lecture is aimed at providing well-ordered knowledge within contemporary linguistics and its directions and trends, applied research methods, researched objects, types and definitions etc.

The course covers theoretical and methodological issues of contemporary linguistics.

Issues:

1. General division of the sciences. Place of humanities among other types of science. Peculiarity of humanities. Various understanding of culture concept. Interpretation as a basic concept of humanities. Valuing. Linguistics among other sciences.

2. Linguistic facts as the subject of research. From the text to the system and the other way round. Opposition langue & parole. Triad: system, norm, usage. The subject of contemporary linguistics.

3. Focus on acts of speech and their types. Research on mechanisms of statement understanding. Grice's implicatures. Relevance theory. Interpretation frames.

4. Semantics and Pragmatics. Use of language and system meaning.

5. Corpora as a tool for linguists and lexicographers.

6. National Corpus of Polish Language, foreign language corporas, comparative corporas.

7. Debatable problems of Polish syntax description: traditional, formal and semantic syntax. Predicative-argumentative syntax.

8. Problems of reference and modality.

9. Problem of language units and constructions. Place of idioms in the language system. Secondary appliance of idioms.

10. Methods of word-formation description. Structural, generative and cognitive description. Registration of new lexical items.

11. Methodological basis of semantic researches. Structural and cognitive semantics. Structural and cognitive definition. Semantics and pragmatics (problems of reference).

12. Structural analysis of meaning of lexemes. Research on synonymic groups. Searching of common and differing elements. Principles of building the explication. Syntax semantics. A. Wierzbicka's theory (alphabet of thoughts).

13. Lexical relations in thesauruses. Wordnet and Słowosieć.

14. Research on linguistic picture of the world. LPW definitions. Basis of reconstruction. Problem of system and text connotations. Encyclopedic knowledge and linguistic knowledge. Values within LPW. LPW and cognitive semantics.

A student who has completed the course:

- skillfully uses notions concerning the methodology of contemporary linguistics (Polish and foreign);

- compares and criticizes research methods elaborated by contemporary linguistics;

- employs literature, both Polish and foreign;

- uses the latest Polish dictionaries, specialized dictionaries of new vocabulary, etymological dictionaries and grammatical dictionaries included;

- uses corpora;

- identifies research issues.

- project for grade (with corpora techniques or with the use of one of the discussed methods typical for current trends in linguistics)
