Prerequisites (description):	Prerequisites: the student ought to have completed basic courses in linguistics offered by the Faculty of Polish Studies, such as descriptive grammar of Polish, culture of Polish language, intruduction to synchronic linguistics. He or she should also be familar with Polish language dictionaries.

Short description:	The course covers essential concepts of the contemporary lexical semantics (from structural semantics to cognitive frameworks), as well as methodological problems connected with meaning description in a natural language. Topics to be discussed in class include (but are not restricted to): - what is 'meaning', what does it mean when a lexical item means sth? - are meanings composed of smaller elements? - are there any expressions that are absolutely equivalent? - can linguistic expressions teach us aything about the world and the way we construe it? We will discuss both theoretical and empirical studies in order to see how given analytical tools may be employed while studying the meanings of linguistic expressions.
Full description:	(in Polish) Zajęcia w I semestrze będą poświęcone zagadnieniom teoretycznym, aby zapoznać uczestników z podstawowymi pojęciami i metodami opisu znaczenia wyrażeń językowych. W trakcie II semestru będziemy się koncentrować na przygotowaniach prac licencjackich: omówimy zasady pisania pracy dyplomowej (kompozycja, przypisy, bibliografia, styl wypowiedzi i in.) i zrecenzujemy kilka przykładowych prac. Uczestnicy będą prezentować tematy i postępy w przygotowaniach własnych prac, które mają być analizą wybranych zjawisk leksykalno-semantycznych współczesnej polszczyzny, ujętych w szerszym kontekście kulturowo-komunikacyjnym, w różnego typu tekstach (mogą to być m.in. teksty publicystyczne, reklamowe, literackie lub szeroko rozumiane teksty internetowe). I SEMESTR 1. Sposoby definiowania znaczenia (przegląd stanowisk lingwistycznych: referencjalna teoria znaczenia, trójkąt semiotyczny, język jako interpretacja świata) 2. Znaczenie systemowe a znaczenie w użyciu. Modyfikacje znaczeń wyrażeń językowych w tekstach (problem polisemii, znaczenia wariantywne, inwariant semantyczny) 3. Kompozycjonalne koncepcje znaczenia. Semantyka składnikowa. Rozkład semantyczny predykatów 4. Struktura znaczenia: miejsce wartościowania i wiedzy o świecie w strukturze znaczeniowej leksemu. Konotacje semantyczne, definicja otwarta (hierarchiczny model R. Tokarskiego, definicja kognitywna J. Bartmińskiego) 5. Podstawy rekonstrukcji językowego obrazu świata, czyli zawartej w języku (czyjejś) interpretacji fragmentu rzeczywistości 6. Perspektywa, punkt widzenia nadawcy odzwierciedlone w leksyce 7. Wartościowanie utrwalone w wyrażeniach językowych 8. Sposoby porządkowania leksyki. Koncepcje pola znaczeniowego. Tematyczne kręgi słownictwa 9. Semantyka rozumienia i ram interpretacyjnych Ch. Fillmore’a 10. Kategoryzacja klasyczna i przez prototyp 11. Elementarne jednostki semantyczne w ujęciu Anny Wierzbickiej. Eksplikacje 12. Profilowanie jako mechanizm pojęciowy odzwierciedlający się w języku 13. Mechanizmy metafory i metonimii oraz ich funkcje w języku i w tekstach 14. Teoria amalgamatów kognitywnych G. Fauconniera i M. Turnera II SEMESTR Zajęcia praktyczne: - korzystanie ze słowników i korpusów (typy i charakterystyka źródeł słownikowych, NKJP i inne zbiory tekstów współczesnej polszczyzny, kwerendy korpusowe) - kompozycja pracy, przypisy, bibliografia - recenzje przykładowych prac licencjackich - regularne prezentowanie postępów w przygotowaniu prac licencjackich, omawianie kwestii problematycznych
Learning outcomes:	Upon completion of the course (60 h.) the student: - will employ basic concepts and terms of lexical semantics (structural and cognitive) - will be familiar with the tenets and research methods of structural and cognitive semantics, will be able to trace the relations between the two paradigms - will select literature relevant for the research subject - will employ dictionaries, language corpora and other sources of linguistic data (with appropriate references) - will present a BA thesis analysing a selected lexical issue in the contemporary Polish language
Assessment methods and assessment criteria:	- attendance (two unjustified absences per semester allowed), active participation in class discussions - readings, presentation, assignments concerning the issues discussed in class - tha basic citerion consists in evaluating the advances in BA thesis preparation (by the end of the 1st semester the student should have selected the subject of the study, methodology and bibliography; by the end of the 2nd semester the student should have submitted the completed thesis)
