Master's seminars

Prerequisites (description):

The class is a continuation of a seminar held in the previous academic year. The seminar will focus on the continuation and development of topics covered in the previous year, and on methodological issues that will enable students to prepare their theses. The classes are intended for students who have completed the first year of graduate studies.

Mode:

Classroom

Short description:

The main focus of the seminar will be the language of argumentation. The basic functions of an argumentative utterance are to justify a given belief (cognitive function) and to persuade the audience to accept it (persuasive function). The combination of these two functions makes argumentative utterances an interesting but also cumbersome research subject.

Full description:

The aim of the seminar will be to continue and develop the themes discussed during the first year of the seminar. The main subject of the first semester will be a) analysis of selected examples of argumentative texts, b) review and redefinition of selected argumentation schemes, c) corpus-based approaches to pragmatics and argumentation: elements of corpus-based pragmatics, review of existing argumentation corpora and approaches to annotation of argumentative texts.

In the second semester, the seminar participants will successively present the results achieved during the preparation of their theses. Detailed selection of readings and topics will be subordinated to the interests and research needs of participants.
