Short description: |
During the course a student acquires a basic communicative competence in Polish. The course enables to understand and use the basic structures, vocabulary and grammar of the Polish language in everyday situations. The class activities revolve around the four core skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. |

The course can be stationary or online in the 1st semester of 2021/2022 - depending on the decision of the UW. Language: Polish; supportive language - English (if necessary) Words and communication: – Basic expressions and questions (e.g. Please read, where is…? etc.); – Greetings and good-byes – Introducing yourself – Making contact – how are you? – Items in a classroom – Adjectives (phrases related to appearance) – Numbers (0-1000) – Professions – Hobbies – Basic verbs (hobbies and sport) – Personal data vocabulary – Countries and nationalities – Do you speak…? Talking about languages – Food – Shopping (asking about prices) – Days of the week – Expressing cause and purpose – Basic time clauses – Colours – Family members – Age Grammar: – Phonetics and spelling – Pronunciation of Polish sounds, intonation, alphabet – Demonstrative Pronouns – Grammatical gender of nouns, personal pronouns and adjectives – Regular case forms for: • Nominative (singular and non-masculine gender plural) • Instrumental (singular and plural) • Accusative (singular and non-masculine gender plural) – Personal Pronouns – Some Possessive Pronouns – Forms: rok / lata / lat – Present Tense (all type of verbs): 4 conjugations * due to the COVID-19 regulations of the UW administration, the syllabi could have been accordingly adjusted. Learning outcomes: |
After the course the student understands and is able to use common expressions and simple statements regarding substantial needs of every-day life. Student is able to express questions regarding private life, e.g.: regarding place of living, known people, and owned objects and he is able to answer those questions. He can introduce himself and he can introduce other people. Student is able to keep a simple conversation under the condition that interlocutor speaks slowly, clearly and is ready to help. |
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: |
Assessment methods: Final test – 20% Midterm tests / presentations – 20% Homework and other assignments – 30% Active attendance at classes (two absences per semester allowed) – 30% To obtain a course credit (ECTS) at the end of the semester, the student has to earn a positive score in each of this categories and pass the final test (course credit will not be awarded to a student who has received a “0” score in one of these categories, which indicates a lack of effort). |
