The course aims at introducing the student to the basic notions of contrastive grammar, vital for translators working on Polish-English translations. |

1. Basic information on typological differences between English and Polish. Overview of grammatical categories. 2. Computational and corpus linguistics in contrastive analysis: an introduction. 3. Countability/uncountability. The category of definiteness and its exponents. 4. Saxon genitive – scope of usage. Grammatical gender. 5. Pronoun repertoire in English and Polish. Functions of pronouns. Forms of address. Gender (a)symmetry. 6. Word formation in English and Polish. Derivational patterns and internationalisation tendencies. 7. Analytic and synthetic constructions. Analytic tendencies in Polish. 8. Tense and aspect in Polish and English. 9. Personal and impersonal constructions. Passive voice. 10. Syntactic schemas. Verbal valency. 11. Various functions of modal verbs. 12. Types of relative clauses. 13. Topicalization. Clefting. 14. Particles and discourse markers. |

Learning outcomes: |
Upon completing the course, the student: • knows the basic concepts of contrastive grammar • is familiar with the repertoire of Polish and English grammatical categories • points to basic typological differences between English and Polish • uses selected monolingual and parallel corpora • points to grammatical structures that may constitute a major challenge for translators • justifies their choice of a given structure as a translational equivalent • notices and corrects syntagmatic translation errors in a translated text |
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: |
Basic requirements: attendance (two absences per semester allowed), active participation (discussion, case studies, teamwork). Grading: final test comprising multiple choice and open-ended questions. Passing grade: 60%. |
