Prerequisites (description):

Participants in the discussion course should have a level of proficiency in Lithuanian enabling them to read literary texts in the original language as well as a basic knowledge in the domain of poetics and theory of the literary text enabling them to analyse and interpret texts translated during classes.

Short description:

Participants in the discussion course acquire a general knowledge of the theory of literary translation and familiarize themselves with problems specific to the translation of Lithuanian texts. The course focuses on the fundamental problems of the translator’s work (historical and cultural context, language play, idiomatic expressions, proper names, stylization, intertextuality, the grotesque, irony and humour as features of the original text) as well as on the presentation of various translation strategies (differentiated with respect to literary genre, type of narration and literary movement), which the student can use in his/her unassisted translation of literary texts of his/her own choice.

The course complements the course „History of Modern Lithuanian Literature”.

Full description:

The aims of the course are:

a) acquainting the student with contemporary tendencies in translation studies,

b) consolidation of the student’s mastery of translation techniques,

c) giving the student a practical training for the task of translator of Lithuanian literary texts.

Participants in the discussion course get acquainted with the methodology of the translator’s work and are asked to work independently on the translation of certain literary texts (on the basis of their knowledge in the domain of translation theory).

During the classes, the fundamental of the translator’s work are discussed together with the factors determining them – genre, style, type of narration, literary trend or historical context of the original material.

Texts for translation (from 20th and 21st centuries Lithuanian literature) are proposed by the teacher, taking into account the participants’ suggestions.

The estimated total number of hours which the student must devote to achieve the learning effects defined for the subject is:

a) contact hours = 30 h.,

b) unassisted preparation for classes = 30 h.,

c) unassisted preparation of credit work (close of winter term) = 15 h.

On completion of the course the student:

(KNOWLEDGE)

- is able to describe the character and scope of application of various translation strategies in the theory and practice of literary translation;

- is able to explain the role and place of translation theory in comparative literary studies and in the general context of literary theory;

- is well acquainted with contemporary tendencies in translation studies;

(SKILLS)

- is able to put his/her theoretical knowledge into practice in the course of a critical assessment of the quality of polish translations of Lithuanian literary texts from 20th and early 21st century;

- is able to translate a literary text from Lithuanian into Polish, making use of the appropriate principles and techniques of translation;

- is able to provide his/her translation with a detailed translatological commentary with the aid of the notional apparatus of translation theory mastered during the course;

(AWARENESS)

- realises the importance of a comprehensive training for the task of a professional translator

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Assessment methods:

a) continual assessment (current preparation for classes and activity) – 50%;

b) term paper (unassisted translation of a Lithuanian literary text provided with a translatological commentary) to be submitted at the close of the term – 40%;

c) checking of attendance – 10%.
