Course in Lithuanian for students of Baltic Philology starting acquisition from zero. Degree of proficiency on completion of the course: A2+ according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, teaching, assessment.

Full description:

Course in Lithuanian for students of Baltic Philology starting acquisition from zero. Degree of proficiency on completion of the course: A2+ in four domains of language activity (perception, production, interaction and mediation) according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, teaching, assessment.

During classes the students:

a) learn to identify and distinguish Lithuanian sounds and sound combinations, and practice their correct reproduction;

b) explain the mechanisms of formation of the basic grammatical forms and constructions of Lithuanian, recognize these forms and constructions and know how to construct them;

c) get acquainted with the basic vocabulary, with expressions connected with their immediate surroundings, everyday life, and typical, predictable communicative situations;

d) learn how to construct simple written texts (note, description, story) and short, but adequate oral statements (adequate reactions in predictable communicative situations);

e) acquire a basic sociocultural competence;

f) get acquainted with, and learn to use, compensatory strategies;

g) acquire routines indispensable in the process of acquisition of Lithuanian, learn how to use bilingual dictionaries, including internet resources, grammatical tables and other teaching aids.

The estimated number of hours the student should devote in order to achieve the learning outcomes defined for the course is:

a) contact hours: 240 h.;

b) current preparation for classes (ca. 5 h. per week): 180 h.;

c) preparation of longer written tests: 60 h.;

d) preparation for shorter lexical and grammatical tests and memorizing tests: 60 h.;

e) preparation for during-term tests (2 per term), term-final tests (2 per year) and final examination: 60 h..

Learning outcomes:

On completion of the course the student:

(KNOWLEDGE)

- recognizes and correctly explains expressions and lexical units presented during the course;

- describes the mechanisms of formation of simple grammatical structures;

(SKILLS)

- understands simple oral and written statements concerning familiar subject-matter if expressed clearly;

- retrieves relevant information from simple informative texts such as timetables, catalogues, posters, advertisements;

- constructs short oral and written texts (note, private letter) concerning familiar subject-matter;

- effectively completes personal data forms and applications;

- reacts fairly spontaneously in predictable communicative situations, using restricted linguistic means;

- uses compensatory strategies;

- effectively used bilingual dictionaries, grammatical tables, and other teaching aids.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Final examination to which the student is admitted on condition of obtaining a credit for exercises.

A credit must be obtained from every teacher before the date of the winter re-examination session (for the winter term) or the date of the final examination (for the summer term).

Conditions for obtaining the term-final graded credit:

a) checking of attendance (necessary precondition) – two absences per term are allowed (per teacher); additional absences must be accounted for in agreement with the teacher; an attendance rate below 50% (for every teacher’s classes) bars from obtaining the course credit.

b) satisfactory marks for during-term tests (2 per term) and term-final tests (2 per year);

c) obtention of credits for all short written and oral tests (including memorizing tests);

c) timely submission of all papers imposed by the teacher;

d) active participation in classes;

e) current preparation for classes.

The examination consists of written and oral parts. The written part is intended to check: a) mastery of grammatical forms and constructions (describing and constructing forms, transformations), b) mastery of vocabulary (giving the meaning of words, meanings in context, knowledge of basic expressions and constructions), c) understanding and composition of written texts. The oral part is intended to check: a) ability of making statements on familiar subjects; b) communicative competence (communicativeness and creativity, adequancy of linguistic reaction, use of compensatory strategies).
