Short description: |
The aim of this course is to discuss some fundamental concepts of general linguistics, such as the nature and structure of language and the subfields of linguistics. The lecture will also introduce the participants to some of the newest methodological developments and analytical practices employed in present-day linguistics. |

The aim of this course is to discuss some fundamental concepts of general linguistics, such as: 1. The definition of a natural language. 2. The nature and structure of language. 3. Language as a system of signs. 4. The subfields of linguistics. 5. Central issues in phonetics and phonology. 6. Central issues in morphology. 7. Central issues in syntax. 8. Central issues in semantics. 9. Central issues in pragmatics. 10. Central issues in lexicology. 11. Ways of classifying natural languages. 12. Linguistic typology. 13. Universalism and relativism in linguistics. 14. Diachronic linguistic analysis. 15. The relation between language and society. 16. The basic concepts of sociolinguistics. 17. The basic concepts of psycholinguistics. 18. The basic concepts of ethnolinguistics. 19. The history of linguistics. 20. Modern linguistic schools (structuralism, generativism, cognitivism). |

Learning outcomes: |
Having completed the course, the student is able to: - identify fundamental linguistic phenomena and processes related to phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics and describe them from synchronic, diachronic and social perspective; - identify basic typological features of natural languages and propose a theoretical analysis thereof; - use a set of basic linguistic terms. |
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: |
Control of attendance (the student is entitled to 2 absences in the semester, each subsequent absence should be credited in a manner agreed with the instructor; absence from 50% of the classes results in failing to receive a credit), current preparation and active participation in classes. Classes conclude with a written exam in the form of a test containing open and choice questions. |
