ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 6.00 OR 4.00 (differs over time) Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Short description:

During classes the students acquire a basic knowledge concerning the geographical situation, ethnic composition, confessional structure, culture, history, economy and politics of Lithuania and Latvia.

Full description:

The aim of the course is to present basic knowledge concerning the specific character of the region, its traditions and customs, culture, economy, and the transformation process between 1988 and 1991. Particular attention is paid to contemporary history, events, phenomena and processes and to developmental tendencies in Lithuania and Latvia as member countries of the European Union.

Active participation of the students in the classes (unassisted reading of source materials, preparation of class papers) should help the students develop the habit of expanding their knowledge in this domain without outward assistance

Learning outcomes:

On completion of the course the student:

(KNOWLEDGE)

- is able to list basic factors determining the specific character of the region;

- has a thorough knowledge concerning the historical and cultural ties linking the Latvia to Poland;

- has insight in the present-day political, social, economic and cultural situation in Latvia and Lithuania;

(SKILLS)

- is able to independently interpret political, socio-cultural phenomena in Lithuania and Latvia and to situate them in the context of European tendencies;

(AWARENESS)

- realizes the necessity of independently expanding his / her knowledge concerning the Baltic region.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Terms and conditions of obtaining a semester credit (for a mark):

(a) regular attendance in classes (a student is entitled to 2 absences per semester, each subsequent absence should be credited in a manner agreed with the instructor; absence from 50% of classes excludes obtaining credit);

b) current preparation and active participation in classes;

c) preparation of a paper on a selected topic in the field of knowledge of the Baltic countries.
