Short description: |
The course presents fundamentals of linguistic typology. During the first part of the course classic approaches to typology are discussed, including phonological, morphological and syntactical typology. During the second part of the course new approaches are discussed, including lexical and semantic typology and semantically based syntactic typology. |

The course addresses the issue of the role of typology in general lingustics. The first part of the course presents classical typological concepts and resulting language types, including: Typologies of phonological systems: consonantal and vocalic languages, prosodic typology (tone and stress languages, typology of stress patterns) Morphological typology: synthetic and analytical languages, inflectional languages; agglutinative vs. amalgamating languages; affix positions, formative types, words and clitics Typology of grammatical categories: nominal categories including gender, class and case; verbal categories including tense, aspect, mood and voice Syntactic typology: word order in clauses and in groups; centrifugal and centripetal languages; configurational and non-configurational languages; nominative and ergative languages Other typological classifications: subject-driven, topic-driven, focus-driven and topic-focus boundary driven languages. Typologies of specific constructions: possession, verbs of movement, secondary predication Lexical and semantic typology: color terms, dimension terms, kinship terms. |

Learning outcomes: |
At the end of this course the student: Is aware of phonological, grammatical and lexical diversities among languages Is capable of analyzing phonological, morphological and syntactic phenomena in specific language (given their adequate description) Understands the relations between phonology, morphology and syntax in diverse languages. Can place Polish and Baltic languages in typological classifications and understands the implications of typological classification of a language K_W06, K_W08, K_U07 |
