ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 5.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;

Short description:

The aim of the course is to acquaint students with dialectal diversity of contemporary Lithuanian. Main dialectological methods of studies and chosen issues concerning the history of Lithuanian dialectology will be presented.

Full description:

The course is aimed to acquaint students with dialectal variety of contemporary Lithuanian.

At first, an overview of methods of dialectological studies will be presented (dialect maps, in-land research peculiarities), as well as the history of Lithuanian dialectology, works in dialectal lexicography and monographs.

Students will acquaint themselves with division of the contemporary Lithuanian into aukštaičių and žemaičių dialects) as well as minor dialectal units (patarmės), with their phonetic, grammatical and lexical features and with main characteristics of Lithuanian dialects outside Lithuania, especially in Poland, near Sejny and Puńsk.

Learning outcomes:

Upon course completion student:

(KNOWLEDGE)

- lists main phonetic, lexical and grammatical features of the aukštaičių and žemaičių dialects ad main characteristics of Lithuanian dialects on Polish territory;

- compares methods of dialectological studies;

(ABILITIES)

- distinguishes between a literary and colloquial utterance in Lithuanian;

- repeats an easy text, especially in aukštaičių dialect, written in the dialectological transcription;

(ATTITUDES)

- absorbs knowledge on literary language and its dialectal varieties.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

In-class work is assessed and final test, carried out in form of conversation on a given topic among the topics of the course.
