ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 15.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;

Prerequisites (description):

Completed course "Descriptive grammar of the Lithuanian language", completed linguistics conversation classes offered in the specialization module of Baltic studies for the degree.

The student is able to operate linguistic terminology in the scope of the presented topics, knows how to independently search for the necessary information, has knowledge of the methodology of writing papers in linguistics, knows the formal requirements of these papers, reads and understands linguistic texts also in Lithuanian.

The seminar prepares the student to independently develop a written thesis on a selected issue in linguistics (on the material of Lithuanian or comparative background).

Short description:

The subject, as a final specialization course in the first degree program, is designed to give the student an opportunity to explore the linguistic knowledge gained in linguistics classes, introduce the student to selected issues of Lithuanian language grammar, and prepare the student for the presentation of the acquired knowledge.

Full description:

The purpose of the course is to introduce the student to a broader range of linguistic knowledge, to develop a selected issue in the form of a written thesis (on the material of Lithuanian or a comparative background) and to prepare the student for the presentation of the acquired knowledge and skills during the bachelor's exam.

The seminar program is divided into two thematic blocks:

a) selected issues of lexis and grammar (grammatical categories) of Lithuanian language and a contrastive view to analogous or close issues of contemporary Polish language;

b) selected issues of language contacts on the Polish-Lithuanian borderland.

Participants learn the methodology of conducting research, familiarize themselves with the basic (classical) and new studies in the field covered by the subject of the seminar, with particular attention to studies related to the subject of their own thesis.

At the next stages, according to the degree of progress, students: undertake independent study of the selected issue, which is the basis of the planned thesis, prepare a detailed plan of the thesis, collect subject and object bibliography, write the thesis.

Group work will be implemented, skills of interpretation of scientific texts during discussions will be developed, the student will deliver and defend his/her own opinions on a selected topic in Lithuanian linguistics, the ability to prepare a selected research issue in the form of a paper using available multimedia techniques, the ability to write a diploma thesis in linguistics (on the material of Lithuanian or a comparative background).

Estimated total number of hours that a student must devote to achieve the learning outcomes defined for the subject:

(a) contact classes - 60 hours,

b) independent preparation for each exercise - 60 hours,

c) preparation of a paper on a selected topic using available multimedia techniques - 30 hours,

d) consultations with the supervisor and preparation of a written thesis = 240 hrs,

e) preparation for the diploma exam = 60 hours.

TOTAL - about 450 hours.

Learning outcomes:

Upon completion of the course, the student:

(KNOWLEDGE)

- has a structured general knowledge including terminology, theories and methodologies in linguistics;

- knows basic linguistic terminology in Polish

and Baltic languages;

- interprets the linguistic problems discussed during the course in an in-depth manner;

(SKILLS)

- (SKILLS) reads, interprets and analyzes texts of a scientific nature and correctly applies the linguistic terminology learned in a manner consistent with the formal requirements for philological studies;

- summarizes and critiques presented research theses of others and his/her own;

- conducts simple linguistic research for the thesis (searches, analyzes, evaluates, selects and uses information from written and electronic sources);

- has the ability to prepare a paper in Polish and Lithuanian using available multimedia techniques.

(SOCIAL COMPETENCIES)

- is ready to constantly develop his/her knowledge;

- understands the ethical issues related to scientific integrity and reliability and honesty in situations of scientific and ideological disputes.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Continuous evaluation (current preparation for classes and activity), preparation of a paper (using available multimedia techniques), preparation of a written thesis on a selected topic at the end of the second semester.
