Short description:

The course gives an overview of Latvian phonology (including suprasegmental phonology), the system of declination, nominal categories and the structure of the noun phrase; the system of conjugation of the Latvian verb and verbal categories; the syntax of the simple and complex sentence.

Full description:

The consists of three major parts, covering phonology, morphology and syntax. Phonology comprises both segmental and suprasegmental phonology.

Morphology concentrates on grammatical categories (gender, number, case, definiteness, tense and aspect, mood and evidentiality, and voice—passive and reflexive). In the context of case the system of prepositions, relational adverbs and relational nouns is presented in detail. The inflectional systems of the noun and the verb are also discussed. An overview is given of the derivation of nouns and adjectives.

The syntactic part covers the main structural types of simple and complex sentences. In this latter domain sentential complementation and its types receives systematic treatment, and the main structural type of adverbial clauses, including constructions with converbs, are characterized.

- has a deepened understanding of the structure of the Latvian phonological system, the nature and functional scope of the grammatical categories of Latvian, and the principal rules of Latvian syntax and morphosyntax.

- knows how to apply the structures explained during the lectures and internalized during exercises when actively using Latvian

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

The students are expected to take an active part in the exercises illustrating every grammatical topic; during the examination they show their skills in the application of grammatical rules in the form of a test and their theoretical insight in the form of answers to questions from a list distributed in advance.
