Short description: |
The purpose of the master's seminar is to enable students to expand the knowledge gained in other linguistics classes, to familiarize them with issues in general and contrastive linguistics, to prepare them to conduct independent research and present their own analyses. Students are introduced to various research methodologies, resources and linguistic tools (e.g. Clarin-PL, Tekstynas, etc.). The overarching goal of the seminar is to prepare students to write their master's theses. Students are introduced to studies related to the topic of the seminar, as well as literature in the field of their chosen thesis topic. They learn to select and apply information from written and electronic sources. |

A selection of issues. - Traditional contrastive research, applied and theoretical confrontational research with semantic intermediary language. - Structure of the intermediary language, its nature and functions. - Formal plane vs. meaning (sentence) plane. - Form vs. function. - Morphological category vs. semantic category. - Description of selected semantic categories (e.g., time, definiteness-indefiniteness). Identification of exponents in Polish and Lithuanian for the highlighted semantic subcategories. Individual issues are discussed based on works in linguistics, linguistic engineering, and linguistic resources and tools available on the web. |
