Knowledge of the Lithuanian language at C1 level.

Lithuanian language course for undergraduate students of Baltic philology starting at C1 level. Level of proficiency at the end of the course: close to C2 according to the scale of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, teaching, assessment.

The instructor's task is to consolidate and perfect the language skills acquired at C1 level.

The ability to produce written texts (e.g. a report or newspaper article on a selected topic, a summary of a scientific article, a note on a lecture, a TV programme or an interview) and spoken texts (a public speech, a press report) is developed and perfected.

The lexical range in various fields is expanded (above all, basic specialist vocabulary in selected fields). The ability to correctly construct specialised texts in Lithuanian, to use idiomatic expressions, phraseological compounds, to distinguish between professional and colloquial lexis, to take care of the culture of the language is improved. The ability to translate selected technical texts is perfected. You read journalistic texts about Lithuanian culture and economy, develop the ability to analytically and critically use available materials on websites.

Estimated number of hours needed to achieve the defined learning outcomes:

(a) number of contact hours: 90 hours (3 ECTS);

(b) ongoing preparation for classes: 60 hrs (2 ECTS);

(c) preparation of longer written works and oral presentations: 60 hrs (2 ECTS);

d) preparation for the semester test and final examination 30 hours (1 ECTS);

After completing the course, the student:

KNOWLEDGE:

- has a structured and in-depth knowledge of the structure of the modern Lithuanian language, knows and uses in spoken and written texts diverse grammatical, syntactic and stylistic forms in accordance with requirements

C2 according to Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (K_W04).

- reads and understands most of Lithuanian texts, including texts in the field of linguistics and literary studies, is able to summarise them in Lithuanian, using terminology and phrases characteristic for the scientific style (K_W10, K_W11)

- has a basic knowledge of selected economic, economic and social issues and an orientation in contemporary Lithuanian cultural life)

SKILLS:

- expresses himself or herself freely, precisely and spontaneously on all general topics, and on specialised topics after prior preparation (K_U02, K_U12);

- analyzes, selects and critically interprets information heard or read in the media, searched through available electronic sources

- takes part in discussions, quoting his/her own and other authors' arguments (K_U02)

- writes longer texts (e.g. press article or report, argumentative or polemical text) and spoken texts (public speaking) with a predominance of complex sentences and a variety of linguistic devices depending on the audience

- independently acquires knowledge from Lithuanian-language sources and develops skills in areas of interest to him/her

SOCIAL COMPETENCES:

- cares about ethics and culture of expression;

- understands the need to take an active part in his/her own learning (works systematically; enriches active and passive vocabulary; chooses independently ways of further self-education and development of his/her interests) (K_K01);

- uses the acquired knowledge and skills for practical purposes independently and in a group (K_K09)

- participates in cultural events devoted to popularisation of Lithuanian culture held in Poland (mainly in Warsaw)

Students are required to attend classes regularly (2 absences per semester with each instructor are allowed) and to obtain semester credit from all C2 level instructors (for the winter semester by the end of the winter semester revision session at the latest, and for the summer semester before the set date for the written examination).

Assessment is subject to:

a) current preparation for class and activity in class;

b) written and oral papers, a summary of a scientific article);

c) written grammar and lexical test (at the end of the winter semester);

d) examination (written and oral in the summer session).

In the written part of the examination, students are tested on their ability to use grammatical forms correctly, their knowledge of specialised lexis, idiomatic expressions and phraseological compounds, as well as to produce an own text (an argumentative or polemical text) using their acquired linguistic and factual knowledge (use of diverse linguistic forms, compliance with the requirements of a given functional style).

The oral part tests comprehension and critical interpretation of a text with a complex structure; the ability to speak freely about complex issues (e.g. contemporary national and world problems).
