ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 2.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Short description:

The subject of the A1 course is Polish Sign Language (PJM) – a native tongue of the Deaf in Poland. The course introduces a basic lexicon (approx. 600 signs) and main grammatical features of PJM. The language is used for everyday communication purposes. Other visual-spatial systems of communication will be shown to the audience, as well as some elements of the Deaf culture.

The aim of the A1 course is to introduce a basic set of signs that cover the following fields: personal pronouns, cardinal and ordinary numerals, everyday expressions, names of things, family, adjectives and adverbs, affirmation and negation, colors, time and calendar, finger alphabet, weather, journey, names of countries and cities, landscape and scenery, appearance vs. personality, the Deaf community, Easter, in the cafeteria or restaurant.

The grammar module includes such issues as simple structures of affirmative, negative, and interrogative sentences, the use of space, non-manual elements, intensity parameter of adjectives and adverbs, agreement verbs, numeral incorporation, dynamics of movement.

The student will get some knowledge about the Deaf, their culture and their visual-spatial languages.

Learning outcomes:

After the A1 course the student is expected to understand simple PJM questions and be able to answer those that concern everyday matters. They will use simple sentences and expressions to describe places they come from and people they know.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

1. attendance: 5%

2. class activity: 10%

3. final test: 85%
