An introduction to the understanding of the Maya culture with its specific geography, chronology, material culture, religion, intellectual achievments, and a geo-political context within the cultural region of Mesoamerica.

- geography of Mesoamerica and the Maya world,

- natural environment,

- chronology (archaic, preclassic, classic, postclassic, and colonial periods),

- abbreviated history of selected sites,

- inner-regional politics of the Maya,

- religion and "cosmovisión",

- writing and art,

- calendar and mathematics,

- architecture, urbanism, "built environment",

- collapses of the Maya culture,

- conquest,

- contemporary Maya.
