  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

This course provides an introduction to the philosophy of culture. Its purpose is historical and problematic reconstruction of the main areas and issues of philosophy of culture in relation to contemporary anthropology, social philosophy, aesthetics.

This course provides an introduction to the philosophy of culture. Its purpose is historical and problematic reconstruction of the main areas and issues of philosophy of culture in relation to contemporary anthropology, social philosophy, aesthetics. The topics:

1. What is the philosophy of culture?

2. The significance of language in building of community.

3. About non-lingustic cognition: seeing, picture, event.

4. Universalism in Christian thought.

5. From utopian thinking to literature: Morus, Campanella, Vico, literature of XIXth century.

6. Critique of civilization and theories of progress: Rousseau, Saint-Simon, Fourier, Weber, Habermas.

7. Dialectics and modernity: Hegel, Horkheimer and Adorno, Benjamin.

8. Philosophy of life: Nietzsche, Bergson.

9. Hermeneutics: Dilthey, Gadamer, Ricoeur.

10. Phenomenology: Husserl, Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty.

11. Psychoanalysis: Freud, Fromm.

12. Marxian theory of labour and ideology.

13. Language, structure, symbolism: de Saussure, Wittgenstein,Derrida, Bourdieu.

14. Postmodernism: Lyotard, Rorty.

15. Philosophy of technology: Ihde, Verbeek.

Learning outcomes:

Ability to think analytically and to make criticism of the socio-cultural phenomena. The ability to see in the culture medium of socio-economic conditions.

Social competence:

Openness to new social phenomena.
Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Oral examination at the end of the academic year. It is possible to divide the exam into two stages: the first semester written exam and the second semester oral exam, the final assessment is the average of the two stages of the examination.
