  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;

Short description:

LECTURE: Library in public space. Responsibility of local authorities. Local and universal functions of a library. Information literacy for children and adults. Popular and exclusive culture. Access to library collections. CLASSES: The aim of the classes is to acquaint the students with the genesis of book science and its place amongst other sciences, the problem of librarians education on the academic level, basic terminology of book science, basic information sources used in bibliological studies and with essential research problems in this field. The following topics concerning contemporary librarianship are discussed during the classes: library law, library network organization, activity of library organizations in Poland and in the world, etc.

Full description:

LECTURE: 1) Library in public space (city and rural areas). Open and closed spaces. Different levels of locality. 2) Local authority's responsibility for planning and programs of libraries. Budget, forms of activities, human resources (remuneration). 3) Libraries' local and universal functions. From closed to open, democratic community. Challenges of cultural, civilisational, ethnic, and language barriers. Developing local relations, based on regional traditions. 4) Dissemination of information literacy among children and adults. Cooperation with families, sschools, organizations, clubes, local media. 5) Popular and exclusive culture. Inter- and intragroup relations. Modern functions of literature (Polish and foreign). Former and contemporary reading interests, their influence on collections development and selection. 6) The rules of access to a library. State censorship cs. social censorship. Library's autonomy, and librarian's responsibility for collection and access to information. CLASSES: 1) The systematics of the book science and its subfields. Book science towards auxiliary sciences of history. 2) Essential research problems. The place of book science amongst academic disciplines. 3) From Bibliography to Bibliology. Evolution of the discipline. Pioneers of book science abroad and in Poland. 4) Librarians education on the academic level ? model of the graduate. Institutions of librarians higher education in Poland. 5) Basic terminology concerning construction and the composition of the book ? the etymological point of view. 6) Lexicography of the book science. Polish and foreign vocabularies, encyclopedias and lexica in the field of the bibliology. 7) Magazines in the field of book science, library and information science. Basic bibliographies and biographical dictionaries. 8) Typology of libraries. Nationwide library network. Library networks in Poland in statistics. 9) National Library in Warsaw as the central library of the state - its history, activity and the most important publications. 10) Polish library law. Records of the libraries act. Legal deposit act. Regulations concerning the NZB (National Library Store).

Learning outcomes:

KNOWLEDGE: Student has general knowledge in the field of book and information science. Has basic knowledge of main development lines and most important achievements in book and information science and the disciplines proper for library science and scientific information.

SKILLS: He is capable of recognizing various types of documents pertinent to the libraries and cultural institutions. Knows how to independently acquire knowledge and develop research skills in the field of book and information science under the guidance of a scientific tutor.

SOCIAL COMPETENCES: Understands the need of permanent education. Correctly identifies and resolves dilemmas related to performing the jobs of librarian and information specialist.

Pisemne zaliczenie po I semestrze - rozwiązanie zestawu zadań (ok. 15, w większości testowych). Zalicza udzielenie powyżej 50% prawidłowych odpowiedzi.
