Short description: |
This class aims to introduce key moments in the stylistic development of rock music to those who have had no previous academic exposure to this form of popular music. The basis of the class is the presentation of the main trends and bands, organising your existing knowledge and providing a starting point for your own academic exploration. |

The following topics (in varying degrees of detail) will be addressed in this class: - The roots of rock and roll: Country and western and rhythm and blues - The rock and roll revolution (1954-1958) - The Brill Building scene. Instrumental rock and roll. Surf rock and surf pop. - New York's Greenwich Village folk scene. Bob Dylan's casus - The so-called British Invasion. North (Liverpool) and South (London), Merseybeat and British rhythm and blues. - Soul: Motown and Stax. Soul a funk - Psychedelic style - Progressive rock - Hard rock and heavy metal - Punk rock - New wave |

Learning outcomes: |
Having completed the course, student: - knows basics of rock and roll history to 1990s - is able to point main turning points in its development - is able to analyse song lyrics and musical settings discussed durig classes - is able to characterize genres: western swing, jump blues, rhythm and blues, rock and roll, folk, folk rock, psychedelic rock, progressive rock, heavy metal, new wave etc. - is able to recognize and name songs (along with performing artist's name) according to presented list of songs |
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: |
The assessment will be based on a two-part test 1) Recognition of musical styles discussed in class. You will be presented with 10 pieces of music which you will be asked to analyse briefly to indicate in which style they are set. (10 points) 2) a test to check the knowledge acquired in class (content of the lecture part + knowledge of the readings). (20 points). A total of at least 16 points are required to pass the course. |
