ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 4.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Prerequisites (description):

The task of the Workshop II is to give a basis for research in early music area. Classes are designed to develop the ability to interprete music sources at different levels - from description of its physical characteristics to the transcription of music notation.

Classes will be dedicated to propedeutics of musical paleography. Students will acquaint theoretical and practical aspects of music notation used from 10th till 16th c.: neumatic, modal, black mensural (Franconian, French, Italian), white mensural notation, as well as keyboard and lute tablatures.

Learning outcomes:

Knowledge of the most important features of selected early chant, mensural and tablature notations. The ability to recognize these notations and make simple transcriptions of early musical scores.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

During a semester students are obliged to do some short transcriptions of early music notation. At the end of the semester they should be able to recognize various types of notation and to make their characteristics.

5. Black mensural Franconian notation

6. Black mensural French notation of the ars nova

7. Black mensural Italian notation of the trecento

8. French and Italian notation of the late 14th century

9. White mensural notation: general principles

10. White mensural notation: coloration and proportions

11. Keybord tablatures: German, Spanish.

12. Lute tablatures: Italian, Spanish, French, German.
