Prerequisites (description):

The participants of the seminar should have the best possible ability to write scientific texts, confirmed by a high grade in a pro-seminar, or other classes of a similar type. All candidates for the seminar please send a one-page sample of their own text.

Mode:

Blended learning

Short description:

I invite to the seminar everyone interested in the musical culture of early modern Europe (16th-18th c.). I offer supervision of theses (Bachelor, Magister, and Doctoral) devoted in particular to the issues of source, repertoire and cultural studies. In the seminar team we discuss various contexts of the musical tradition, incl. ideological, religious, aesthetic and social history. Our interests also include the relationship between musical culture and its literary imaging ("music and letters") and the so-called musical philology, including not only the musical text, but also the accompanying paratexts.

Full description:

The first semester of the seminar is devoted to defining the subject and scope of the thesis research, setting the subject and title of the thesis, developing its detailed outline and collecting all the necessary sources and bibliography of the subject.

In the second semester, the participants of the seminar write subsequent subsections of their work, systematically presenting the results of their achievements at subsequent meetings, during which the content of the work is discussed by the team.

Bibliography:

The bibliography is selected adequately to the topics reported by the seminar participants.

Learning outcomes:

As a result of the cooperation, the student becomes proficient in the selection of source material, collecting literature, formulating research issues and hypotheses, problematizing the content and systematically presenting them in oral and written form.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

The basis for passing the first semester is submitting in writing a detailed outline of the work along with a full list of sources and bibliography of the subject.

Completion of the second semester (for the bachelor's seminar) is based on the completed papers submitted for review (criteria can be found at http://imuz.uw.edu.pl/studia-2/procedury-jakosci-ksztaloszenia/).

In the case of master's and doctoral dissertations, one chapter of the thesis is the basis for passing the second semester.

Practical placement:

It is advisable (though not necessary) to complete an internship (e.g. in source studies) in one of the music libraries.
